LIMPOPO – Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old nephew in connection with a devastating Rooival village arson incident that obliterated a family property valued at approximately R1.5 million. The Mahwelereng Police, operating within the Waterberg District, took the suspect into custody following a targeted manhunt after the destructive fire.

The blaze reportedly broke out on Friday, 24 July 2026, at approximately 20:00. At the time of the incident, the property owner was away in Seshego and was alerted to the emergency via a telephone call from his younger sister.

Emergency firefighting teams from Mokopane were immediately dispatched to battle the inferno. By the time the homeowner arrived at the scene around 23:00, the destruction was absolute: a ten-roomed main residence and an adjacent three-roomed back house were entirely consumed by the flames, resulting in the total loss of all belongings stored inside the structures.

Early investigative findings by the Mahwelereng Police point to the homeowner’s 22-year-old nephew as the primary suspect. A local neighbour reportedly spotted the young man at the location while the fire was active. Allegedly, as residents rushed to help extinguish the flames, the suspect physically confronted the community members to hinder their efforts before escaping the area on foot.

In response to the incident, a formal arson docket was opened, and a swift manhunt was initiated. This led to the suspect’s successful apprehension within Rooival village. He is slated to make his first appearance at the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026, to answer to formal arson charges.

Law enforcement officials confirm that investigations into the matter remain actively ongoing.
