22 life sentences for serial rapist

The high court in Limpopo sentenced a serial rapist to 22 life terms in prison, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Monday.

Jonas Kgabo Moshabi, 51, was sentenced on Friday after being convicted of various crimes including rape, attempted murder, housebreaking, robbery with aggravating circumstances, malicious damage to property, and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, NPA spokeswoman Mashudu Malabi said.

Malabi said Moshabi’s reign of terror started in 2005 and ended in 2012 with his arrest. He is believed to have raped 32 women in and around Seshego.

Malabi said the accused roamed around various communities under the cover of darkness and broke into several homes to rape the women.

He was arrested after police linked his DNA to the offences.

The court found that Moshabi did not show any remorse and that he was a danger to society.

The NPA welcomed the lengthy sentence. Limpopo director of public prosecutions Ivy Thenga said the punishment fit the crimes given the violent nature of the offences committed.
