LIMPOPO — A decisive law enforcement crackdown in Northam has led to the arrest of 16 individuals connected to recent anti-foreigner march violence, prompting Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers to issue a stern condemnation of the looting and property destruction in the Waterberg District.
The unrest peaked on Friday, 31 July 2026, disrupting a South African Police Service (SAPS) community awareness initiative at RDP Block 7. Allegations indicate that a faction tied to the march targeted campaign attendees, resulting in the assault of three local community members. Furthermore, two vehicles were vandalized during the chaos, one belonging to the Northam Station Commander and the other to a foreign national who owns a local business.
The aggression reportedly escalated as the group moved to a foreign-owned spaza shop. There, they plundered groceries and various goods, notably a refrigerator, before torching the proprietor’s vehicle. Investigators have also connected this same group to a separate string of criminal activities—including common robbery, theft, and common assault—that took place a day earlier on 30 July 2026.
In a coordinated multidisciplinary response, SAPS officers alongside allied law enforcement agencies successfully apprehended the 16 suspects, whose ages range from 21 to 45. They are currently facing formal charges of public violence. As part of the evidentiary collection, authorities confiscated a refrigerator and a walking stick.
The accused are slated to stand before the Northam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 03 August 2026. Emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to unrest, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers stated, “Criminal acts committed under the guise of community concerns or protest will not be tolerated. Those responsible for violence, looting and intimidation will face the full might of the law. We urge communities to raise their concerns peacefully and allow the police to deal with criminality within the confines of the law.”
Authorities confirm that the investigative process remains highly active, warning that additional arrests are probable as the probe into the Waterberg District disturbances continues.
