14 Illegal miners arrested, 8 chrome laden trucks confiscated, Thabazimbi

Police apprehend fourteen illegal miners and confiscate trucks with Chrome laden trailers worth R 15 Million. Members of the Provincial Organized Crime Unit in Limpopo, assisted by the Detectives in Thabazimbi and Security Officers from the Northam Platinum Mine, have on, Friday 14 August 2020, arrested fourteen (14) suspected illegal miners aged between 26 and 56 and confiscated eight trucks with Chrome laden trailers worth R 15 Million.

The suspects were arrested in the early hours of 13 August 2020, at about 04:00, during an Intelligence driven operation that was conducted in the Thabazimbi area, following information that was received about the illegal mining activities.

The suspects will appear in Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 August 2020, facing charges in relation to the contravention of the Regulations under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Act (illegal mining).
