The Department of Public Works says a rapid follow-up process is planned to make land available quickly to give momentum to the ‘land theft’ program. The state has a property portfolio of more than 93,000 buildings and more than 1.9 million hectares of land under the control of the Department.

The government’s land grabbing program entails that land, as well as any other property, can be claimed by the ‘rulers’ without compensation.

During a briefing in the parliamentary committee, Sasa Subban, the deputy director general of the department said 100 properties were earmarked to be released by the end of 2019, and 100 properties in the following financial year.

He says the North West has been identified as the province with the largest number of outstanding restitution claims, which apparently covers 93 properties.

Subban says the province had a total of 261 properties that were claims on which is a total of 142,000 hectares of land.

Political opinionists reckon the entire process that is now being ‘accelerated’ is an attempt to recruit government votes for the upcoming election.
