Armed robbers held up residents at gunpoint in their homes during two separate home invasions in the Durban area over the last 24 hours.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said that in the latest incident a gang of armed robbers had targeted a home in Yale Crescent in Reservoir Hills at around 10.45am this morning. “Three armed suspects arrived at the property in a grey Toyota double cab and held up the resident and her domestic staff at gunpoint. The gang tied up the domestic worker, a gardener and fled the scene with a large sum of cash and jewellery. No injuries were reported.” Mathios said.

Sydenham SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios said armed robbers had also invaded a home in Rockdale Avenue in Westville at around 2.55pm yesterday. “The Westville resident noticed that a white Mercedes Benz had pulled up outside his home and assumed that family members had arrived to visit him. He opened the gate without making sure who he was letting in,” Mathios said. “Several suspects entered the property and held up the resident at gunpoint, forcing him to lie down on the floor. They loaded a flat screen television into their vehicle and fled the scene. No injuries were reported,” Mathios said.

Mathios said it was unclear what other valuables may have been stolen during the robbery.

Westville SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

He advised residents to be extremely cautious before opening up security gates to let visitors onto their property. “If someone rings your doorbell, even if you are expecting family to visit or a contractor to arrive to work at your property, always physically check by looking out of the window to see who is standing or parked outside. If your gate is not visible from your house, consider installing a CCTV camera, that can also be linked up to your home alarm system, so you can safely check who is outside before opening up. A little security consciousness with attention to seemingly small details goes a long way to protecting your family from crime,” Mathios said.
