Westville domestic worker assaulted and locked in garage

Armed robbers assaulted a Westville domestic worker while she was busy hanging up washing this afternoon, but swift action from the police led to the arrest of one of the suspects.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a neighbour had reportedly heard the domestic worker screaming out “don’t kill me” during the robbery at a residential premises in Roger Sishi Road. The incident occurred at around 12.30pm.

“The domestic worker had been outside on a rear sundeck, hanging up clothes to dry, when a suspect ambushed her. He hit her over the head with a metal rod and then locked her in the garage,” Mathios said. “The suspect ransacked the house and made off with a laptop and other valuables.”

SAPS Westville responded swiftly to the scene and arrested the suspect in possession of the stolen property. “The domestic worker declined medical assistance,” Mathios said.

Mathios said residents earlier spotted suspects on a property in Bernadette Drive in Pinetown and alerted Blue Security to the scene. “An armed response officer arrived at the scene and found two suspects at the corner of Glenugie Road and King Federick Place.”

“When the suspects saw the armed response officer approaching them they pretended to be digging in a rubbish bin. The officer arrested one of the suspects and took him back to the property. The other suspect ran away,” Mathios said.

He was handed over to the Pinetown SAPS.
