Many Westville and Berea West residents can breathe easier today with the arrest of a wanted housebreaking suspect on 6 April 2020 by Blue Security tactical team units.
“The arrest came about after an alert of a housebreaking in progress in Westville on Monday afternoon,” said Blue Security Tactical Ambassador for Moseley and Queensburgh, Andre Engels. “An observant neighbour had seen the suspect attempt to open the side door of the house next door. However, the suspect had already fled by the time the reaction officer responded to the scene,” Engels said.
“After receiving a description of the suspect our officer began patrolling the area in order to locate him. A man walking along Rockdale Avenue was stopped and questioned, but attempted to flee the scene when asked to sit on the ground. He dropped the camp chair he had been carrying and began fencehopping between the houses in the area,” Engels said.
With the arrival of backup from fellow tactical team units and members of Metro Police the suspect was successfully surrounded, trapped in a property and apprehended by Blue Security reaction officers. “The suspect was taken back to the scene of the housebreaking where community members identified him as one who has robbed most of the houses in the area and who has multiple cases against him,” Engels said.
Residents of Berea West also arrived at the scene and identified the suspect who was handed over to an attending member of Westville SAPS, arrested and transferred to the police station. The stolen camp chair was also recovered. “The suspect is a wanted criminal in the area who has been terrorizing local residents and his arrest is an extremely satisfying one for the community,” Engels said.
In a separate incident on Tuesday morning a man was apprehended and arrested in connection with the theft of 9-kilogram gas bottles. “Our reaction officers had been patrolling in the Congella area when they noticed three men carrying the gas bottles,” Engels said. “When the suspects spotted the response vehicle they dropped the gas bottles and fled the scene. A chase ensued and one suspect was apprehended and arrested,” Engels said. The suspect and the stolen gas bottles were handed to members of Umbilo SAPS for further processing.
