On the morning of 24 January 2018, at 07:00, at Warwick Avenue near the bus terminals, two men were playing pool and having drinks.

The suspect arrived and demanded their drinks and when they refused the suspect drew a firearm and fired three shots in there direction but no one sustained any injuries.

The community members gathered and assaulted him. He was then placed under arrest. A 9mm unlicensed firearm used to commit the offence was also recovered.

Preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that the suspect was wanted for a murder that took place on 20 January 2018 at 20:00, where 34 year old Khulekani Sigwebela was allegedly shot and killed at Julius Nyerere Avenue.

It is alleged that the victim was having drinks with his friends when he and the suspect had an argument. The suspect drew a firearm and fired shots at the deceased. He sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and was certified dead at the scene by paramedics.

The 25 year old suspect will appear in court soon facing charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

We welcome greater community involvement in the fight against crime, we appeal to our citizens not to take law into their hands but to hand over those that have been found committing crimes to police so that our courts can pass an appropriate sentence,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
