Members of Phoenix SAPS whilst on patrol noticed a suspicious white Audi parked at the entrance of the Phoenix Plaza facing the post office.
When the SAPS members alighted their motor vehicle to investigate the suspicious motor vehicle they then came under heavy gunfire. The members then returned fire in the heavy exchange of bullets the suspects managed to get into their vehicle and flee.
Trans Natal Flying squad received the call and responded within minutes. Upon arrival to the scene the tactical response officers noticed the SAPS motor vehicle was shot several times luckily no members were injured.
It was established that the Mayuri jewellery shop was broken into and the robbers made a getaway when the police noticed them.
Several other law enforcement departments responded to the incident which shows unity in fighting crime.
