Residents living in some of South Africa’s highest-risk burglary districts are being encouraged to assess their home security measures following new research that highlights significant regional differences in residential burglary rates.
The analysis, conducted by Clearview Fencing, specialists in clearview gate installation, examined residential burglary statistics from July to December 2025 and calculated the number of reported burglaries per 100,000 households across South Africa’s districts.
The findings reveal that uMzinyathi recorded the highest residential burglary rate in the country, with 2,586 reported burglaries per 100,000 households during the six-month period. The figure is more than double that of Frances Baard, which ranked second with 1,238 burglaries per 100,000 households.
Central Karoo followed closely behind with 1,201 burglaries per 100,000 households, while Overberg and Sarah Baartman completed the top five with rates of 1,123 and 1,016 respectively.
The data suggests that while burglary remains a concern nationwide, some districts are experiencing substantially higher levels of household crime than others.

A spokesperson for Clearview Fencing said: “Burglary rates can vary significantly between districts, but the impact on households is often the same. Beyond the financial loss, break-ins can leave residents feeling unsafe in their own homes.
“Homeowners should regularly review their property’s security, paying particular attention to vulnerable access points such as gates, perimeter fencing, doors and windows. Visible security measures can act as a deterrent and help reduce opportunities for opportunistic criminals.”
The research highlights the importance of preventative security measures, particularly in districts where burglary rates remain elevated. Experts recommend ensuring locks and gates are properly maintained, keeping outdoor areas well-lit and promptly addressing any weaknesses in perimeter security.
With burglary rates in some districts substantially exceeding the national norm, the findings serve as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and proactive when it comes to protecting their homes.
