Umhlanga armed robbers chased down following swift team work

Strong team work by police and a private security company led to the arrest of three armed robbers who held up security guards in Umhlanga Rocks Drive and fled in a stolen vehicle early this morning.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said armed response officers had responded to the scene of the crime in Umhlanga where security guards from another private security company had been patrolling at 4.45am this morning.

“A gang of three armed robbers arrived in a silver Mercedes Benz and held up two security guards at gunpoint on the premises. They ordered the security guards to lie face down on the ground. A third security guard went out to look for his colleagues when they did not return timeously from their patrol of the property, and he was accosted by one of the robbers,” Mathios said. “A tussle ensued but the security guard surrendered when the suspect pulled out a firearm and threatened to shoot him. The suspects proceeded to a car park where they stole a Toyota Hilux and fled the scene.”

Mathios said one of the security guards then alerted his office and a description of the stolen vehicle was circulated to the SAPS.

“Members of Phoenix SAPS spotted the vehicle and gave chase into Lindalani where they caught up with the gang, arrested the suspects and recovered the stolen vehicle,” Mathios said.
