Two suspects aged 27 and 29 appeared today in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court for car hijacking and robbery. It is alleged that on 3 February 2018 at about 00:30, the 34 year old Uber driver was dropping off a client at J section, KwaMashu when he was ordered by the same passenger to stop next to the group of men who were standing on the side of the road.

At a gunpoint, the driver was robbed of his vehicle and belongings. Thereafter, he was taken to an automatic teller machine where an undisclosed amount of cash was withdrawn from his bank account. A case of robbery and carjacking was opened at KwaMashu police station for investigation which led to the arrest of the suspects.

The two suspects were also linked to another car hijacking incidents of Uber drivers that occurred in April 2018 in KwaMashu, Greenwood Park and Sydenham policing areas.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa applauds the action taken by the police to secure the arrest. “The team will continue to work around the clock to ensure that the other perpetrators of similar crimes are arrested to face the Criminal Justice System,” he said.
