On Wednesday, 3 October 2018, Durban High Court convicted and sentenced two accused, Siphamandla Sangweni (29) and Philani Khambule (26) to life imprisonment each for murder, 15 years each for business robbery and a further eight years for each count of attempted murder.

Both accused were sentenced after the judge heard how they attacked the shop owners and a customer at South Village, Gledhow Mini Market.

During March 2016, the victim was at his supermarket shop when he was approached by two armed suspects. While the suspects were busy robbing the victim, a shot was fired from an adjacent bottle store where a man, Marshal Naidoo (28) was shot and killed and his mother and a customer were wounded during the shooting.

They were shot by another group of suspects who were robbing them of cash and other items. All suspects fled the scene in a Mercedes Benz belonging to the victims. Later it was found abandoned about a kilometre away from the scene. A case of armed robbery, murder and two counts of attempted murder was opened at KwaDukuza police station for further investigation.

Through hard work by experienced detectives from the station, they managed to trace and arrested two suspects within a month after the crime was committed. Both accused were charged with business robbery, murder and two count of attempted murder. Finally both accused were convicted and sentenced by the Durban High Court.
