At approximately 13:40 members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to Magwaweni in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal, after receiving information that a truck carrying bread had been hijacked by three armed suspects. The caller also stated that the driver had been kidnapped and taken with the vehicle.

Reaction officers were dispatched to the call and upon arrival at the scene of the hijacking they were met with members of the Tongaat SAPS. Information was received that the truck was driven into a nearby sugar cane plantation.

Reaction officers and SAPS officials conducted an extensive search of the area before locating the truck exiting the cane field.

The driver informed officers that after being hijacked, one suspect remained on the main road while the other two proceeded with the truck into the cane field were they robbed him of his cellphone and R80 in cash.

They were in the process of cutting open a metal safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash when they received a call from their accomplice informing them that reaction officers and the police were in the area searching for the truck.

The suspects then abandoned the robbery and fled into the cane field.

The driver was not injured during the robbery.
