A devastating collision between a truck and a passenger van on the N2 northbound near the Mtunzini Toll Plaza has left at least eight people dead and several others injured early Sunday morning. The victims were members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) on a pilgrimage to Durban when the crash occurred around 6:37 AM.
Details of the Accident
According to KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma, the van was carrying 24 passengers when it collided with the truck. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, with some in critical condition while others sustained minor injuries. The driver of the truck has been arrested and is under police custody while receiving medical treatment.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the crash but emphasized that reckless driving or possible intoxication could be factors. Investigations are ongoing, and charges—which may range from culpable homicide to murder—will depend on the findings.
Response and Road Clearance
MEC Duma urged the public to avoid sharing graphic images of the accident scene out of respect for the victims’ families. He confirmed that all affected families have been notified, and identification of the deceased is underway.
While the wreckage is still being cleared, traffic on the N2 has resumed flowing, though delays may persist.
Condolences and Call for Caution
Duma extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished mothers in the province a peaceful Mother’s Day despite the tragedy. He reiterated the importance of road safety, urging drivers to remain vigilant.
As the investigation continues, authorities will provide further updates.
