Three suspects in Court facing kidnapping and murder charges

Three suspects are due to appear today in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court facing kidnapping and murder charges. They will join the other suspect, Sipho Sithole (41) who appeared on 23 June 2017 facing the same charges and was remanded in custody.

It is alleged that the victim, Luyanda Shezi (23), was kidnapped and severely assaulted by the suspects. On 13 June 2017, the victim was at Industrial Park at Phoenix area when he was allegedly kidnapped by the suspects. They were allegedly accusing him of being involved in criminal activities in the area. He was severely assaulted with bush knives, sjamboks and stones and forced into a Nissan Hardbody motor vehicle. The suspects drove away and the victim never came back home.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for arresting suspects who allegedly take the law into their own hands. “We will not tolerate such people who do not respect the law and commit vigilantism. I encourage community members to hand over alleged criminals to the police and not take the law into their own hands. Those who conduct such unlawful act will face the long arm of the law,” he said.
