A tragic bus accident this morning in oThongathi, KwaZulu-Natal, has left three people dead and 12 others seriously injured. Emergency services are still on the scene, with rescue efforts ongoing as one passenger remains trapped inside the wreckage.

The crash occurred around 6:20 a.m. when the bus veered off the R102 bridge near the N2 highway, plummeting approximately 10 to 20 meters to the ground below. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the accident, as initial inspections revealed no apparent tire failures.

KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Cindy Msimang confirmed the fatalities, stating, “Three people have been confirmed deceased on scene, while 12 others sustained serious injuries. Our teams, including the fire department, are still working to free one trapped individual.”

The bus landed at the bottom of the bridge, complicating rescue and investigation efforts. “It is a challenge to gather details as the bus is far from the road, and our officers are struggling to access critical information,” Msimang added.

The R102 remains closed as emergency personnel clear the scene, with motorists urged to avoid the area. The identity of the bus company and the passengers’ travel details remain unknown as authorities work to verify registration and ownership.

Authorities have appealed for patience while investigations continue.
