An intelligence driven operation was conducted by police in Weenen on 19 July 2021 at 13:25. The team was searching for a suspect who was wanted for charges of attempted murder that were committed last year.

During the operation, the suspect was located at Sahlumbe area where he was found in possession of a pistol with three rounds of ammunition. The 40-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for unlawful possession of a firearm and attempted murder.

It is alleged that on 18 October 2020 at 18:00, two brothers were travelling in a vehicle at Manqomfini area in Weenen when they were shot at by a known suspect.

No injuries were sustained but their vehicle was damaged. Charges of attempted murder were opened at Weenen SAPS.

The team proceeded to Mtebhelu area where an AK47 and a shotgun were found abandoned in one of the homesteads.

Police seized 30 various rounds of ammunition. The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests.

The suspect is appearing before the Weenen Magistrates’ Court on 21 July 2021, on charges of unlawful possession of firearm, ammunition and attempted murder.
