Police officer shot in Kempton Park.

Two security guards aged 31 and 34 and a suspected robber were shot dead during a shootout in Umlazi, KZN, police said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane described the ordeal as a barbaric attack directed to innocent people.

The robbery staged at a store at the Umlazi Mall on Wednesday resulted in a shootout between security guards and the robbers. Two women, one of them pregnant, were caught in the crossfire and sustained gunshot wounds. The women were taken to hospital.

Some of the armed robbers fled on foot after they stole an undisclosed amount of cash as well as cellphones belonging to customers.

“Cases of business robbery, three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Umlazi police station for further investigation,” said Zwane.

Zwane said detectives were working around the clock to ensure that the criminals were traced and brought to justice.

“We are appealing to anyone or witnesses who may know the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward and give us information,” said Zwane.
