Three armed hijackers were killed in Durban’s notorious Gelebelands Hostels following a high speed chase, police said on Thursday.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said that the incident happened on Wednesday evening when a silver Mercedes Benz was hijacked as the owner was reversing out of his property in Durban’s Merebank suburb.
The police’s Provincial Task Team and the dog unit responded and the car was spotted on Himalaya Road.
“A high speed chase ensued however the suspects lost control of the vehicle and overturned as they attempted to enter the Glebelands Hostel. The suspects managed to exit the vehicle and opened fire at police in an attempt to escape.”
The three men, aged between 20 and 25-years-old were killed in the gun battle and three pistols were recovered.
Magudulela said the weapons would be sent for ballistic testing.
