Third suspect arrested for murder of police captain, Durban

A 32 year old suspect linked to the last year’s murder of Kwamaphumulo Captain Dumisani Mhlanzi (54) has been arrested.

The suspect was arrested on 12 June 2019, at Cato Crest in a joint operation involving the Hawk’s Durban Serious Organised Crime, Crime Intelligence and the National Intervention Unit. He was found in possession of unlicensed firearm with live ammunition.

Captain Mhlanzi was shot and killed at KwaMaphumulo on 23 February 2018. The suspects at the time made off with his service pistol. In March last year two suspects Mdeliseni Mathonsi (29) and Goodboy Sibiya (40) were arrested and they are still in custody.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 June 2019 for murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition whilst Mathonsi and Sibiya are scheduled to stand trial on 29 July 2019 at the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
