Nearly 400 suppliers to the Durban City Council have submitted false tenders in the process of obtaining contracts.
The other metro councils received between 60 and 80 such applications, and this raises the question of who awarded the tenders knowing it could be false?
The Mayor Sipho Nzuza indicated that an investigation will be conducted and that contractors will then be placed on a “blacklist.”
This practice amounts to a criminal offense and lawyers believe the companies should be prosecuted.
Political interference leads to unethical behavior by officials, said an opposition member.
