Taxi owner’s killers handed life imprisonment plus 22 years

The Durban High Court sentenced Cebo Xulu (25) and Patrick Ndayi Mthethwa (27) to life imprisonment for murder, ten years for attempted murder, five years for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition, three years for possession of stolen vehicle and four years for malicious damage to property. The accused were sentenced in court on 20 October 2023.

On 19 September 2019, Dustin Pillay (40) who was a taxi owner was seated under a bus shelter with other taxi owners at Shakaskraal. While he was under the shelter, he was approached by a vehicle with three occupants. Without uttering a word, the men opened fire at him and fled the scene. The victim was declared dead at the scene. The culprits abandoned their vehicle not far from the crime scene and it was recovered by police. It was established that the vehicle was stolen at Westonaria in Gauteng. Other vehicles that were in the vicinity were damaged. Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened at Umhlali SAPS and the docket was transferred to the Provincial Taxi Task Team for further investigation

After an intensive investigation and evidence gathered by the investigating officer, the three accused were traced and put behind the bars in 2020. They were tried in court and their bail was denied. Care Mfanufikile Dlamini (29) took ill while in custody and he later died in hospital. The remaining accused were kept behind the bars until their sentence.
