Task Team Cracks Down on Cross-Border Crime in KwaZulu-Natal, Recovers 20 Stolen Vehicles

A specialized task team deployed in Emanguzi has intensified efforts to combat cross-border crimes in northern KwaZulu-Natal, leading to multiple arrests and the recovery of stolen vehicles.

In recent weeks, intelligence-driven operations resulted in the arrest of five suspected vehicle smugglers and the recovery of 20 stolen vehicles, including 11 bakkies, seven SUVs, a minibus, and a sedan. Investigations revealed that the vehicles were stolen from various areas, including Durban Central, Durban North, Westville, Chatsworth, Pinetown, and Umhlali.

In the latest operation on Monday, 09 June 2025, authorities intercepted a vehicle en route to the Kosi Bay border following a tip-off. One suspect was arrested and found in possession of fraudulent documents intended to facilitate the illegal crossing. Preliminary investigations suggest the individual may also be linked to vehicle insurance fraud, with further inquiries underway.

The national intervention involves a multi-disciplinary team from the South African Police Service (SAPS), including crime intelligence, proactive and reactive policing units, and detectives. Their mandate is to tackle cross-border crimes such as vehicle theft, house and business robberies, carjackings, and violent offenses, including murder and attempted murder.

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling criminal networks operating along the northern KZN border, urging the public to report any suspicious activities.
