Suspect shot dead by police in Inanda

DURBAN – On Friday night, 31 January 2020, police officers from the Inanda Cluster Crime Combating Team conducted an intelligence driven operation targeting two men who were spotted walking in the area carrying firearms.

The suspects were spotted in Congo at Inanda and when police approached them, they ran into the bushes. A chase ensued and the suspects opened fire on the police officers. During the shootout, a 23-year-old suspect was shot and fatally wounded whilst his accomplice managed to flee.

A firearm (Glock) and ammunition was recovered from the deceased. An inquest, attempted murder as well as illegal possession of firearm and ammunition case was opened at the Inanda police station for further investigation.

The KwaZulu Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, has commended the police officers for the clampdown on illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. “We are very pleased that none of our police officers were harmed during the attack. We remain steadfast in our commitment to eradicating criminality and no amount of violence direct at our police officers is going to deter us from carrying out our mandate,” he warned.
