In the early hours of 19 February 2021, Public Order Police and Cato Manor police officers conducted an intelligence driven operation at the Cato Crest informal settlement. Police officers received intelligence of a man who was in unlawful possession of a firearm. The operation yielded positive results and a 26-year-old man was found in possession of a pistol and rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was taken to Durban Central police station for further processing he was charged for being in unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

On further investigation, the suspect was linked to a number of business robberies committed in the Umbilo area. The firearm will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine whether he is linked to other serious cases committed in the province.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya welcomed the arrest and the recovery of the firearm.
