Suspect hides in cupboard in Verulam

HOUSE ROBBERY – At approximately 10:29 am members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to Southridge Circle in Verulam after receiving a call from a member of public requesting assistance after a suspect had gained entry into her home.

Several Reaction Officers were dispatched to the residence and upon arrival entered the home in search of the suspect. After conducting a thorough search of the house it was confirmed that the suspect had already fled. Officers found the back door to the house ajar. A 23 year old female informed Reaction Officers that she was alone in her home watching television in the lounge when she decided to get her cellphone from her bedroom. As she entered her room she noticed an African male dressed in a red and white track suit hiding in her closet. She immediately started screaming for help and ran to her neighbours home where she contacted RUSA for assistance.

The suspect stole a Blackberry cellphone and R500 in cash from her wallet before fleeing the scene. He gained entry into the home undetected via the back door, while the victim was in the lounge, and searched the bedrooms for valuables. An inspection of the back door (picture 2) confirmed that no force was used to gain entry and according to the victim they had not opened it in years.

This was the second suspect found hiding inside a cupboard in the Verulam area this week. On Saturday a house break-in suspect was arrested by Reaction Officers after he was found hiding inside a cupboard at a home he had broken into on Russom Street.
