Yesterday, 6 December 2016, at about 22:30, Durban Tactical Response Team followed information concerning illegal firearms in the Moyeni area of Upper Tugela, Bergville.

The members proceeded to the said area and were ambushed by a group of armed men. A shootout ensued leading to one of the attackers being fatally wounded. A police officer as well as the member of public sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to nearby hospital for medical treatment.

A 7.65 mm pistol with four live rounds of ammunition as well as several spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. Charged of inquest and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Upper Tugela SAPS for further investigation.

Kwa Zulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for their dedication that led to the firearm recovery and ammunition. “We will ensure that the suspects will be arrested soon. I would like to wish the injure police officer and the community member a speedy recovered,” he said.
