On 5 July 2020, at 17:00, Ndwedwe police officers received a report of shooting at Okhambeni area in Ndwedwe and immediately responded. Upon arrival at the scene, they witnessed a man who was shooting randomly. When the suspect spotted the police officers, he began shooting at them.

During a shootout with the police officers, the 38-year-old suspect was fatally wounded. He was also found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The investigations revealed that the same suspect was sought on a burglary case reported at Verulam SAPS on 13 August 2019 as well as a theft of motor vehicle reported at Ndwedwe. It is alleged that the house was broken into and a 9mm pistol, TV, laptop and a cellphone were taken.

Charges of inquest, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm were opened.

“We are relieved that none of our police officers were harmed during the shootout,” said the Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
