The Vryheid Stock Theft Unit and Ulundi Task Team conducted an intelligence driven operation over the weekend aimed at arresting stock thieves and recovering stolen livestock.

On 12 June 2020, a bakkie with four occupants was spotted near the Triangle Store in Vryheid and it was stopped. Two of the occupants alighted and fled on foot whereas two who were at the back of the bakkie remained behind. Police searched the vehicle and found cattle carcass.

The men failed to provide police with an explanation concerning where they obtained the meat from and they were immediately arrested. Two men aged 18 and 46 were charged for possession of stolen property.

Police proceeded to Bellevue where they recovered eight calves with their mouths gagged. Police arrested two men aged 24 and 37 for stock theft and possession of stolen property. All the arrested suspects will be profiled to determine if they are linked to pending stock theft cases in the area.

They will all appear in the Vryheid Magistrates’ Court soon.
