Somalian national killed during robbery in Everest Heights

A Somalian national was killed on Monday during a business robbery in Mhlasini, Everest Heights, Verulam.

At approximately 19:53 members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the tuck shop which is situated in an informal settlement after receiving several calls regarding a shooting. Upon arrival reaction officers found the victim behind the counter. He had been shot once and sustained a large gaping wound to his head. Medics assessed the man and found that he was fatally injured in the shooting and died at the scene.

According to an employee of the store she noticed three men enter the business. One suspect was armed with a rifle or shot gun while a second suspect was armed with a knife. The woman hid in the store when the suspect shot the victim without warning through a security gate. They then stole an undisclosed amount of cash before they fled the scene. It could not be established if the suspects fled on foot or if they had a getaway vehicle parked in the vicinity.

The deceased was employed by his brother who owns five other tuck shops and supermarkets in the Verulam area. Emotional friends and family of the deceased gathered at the business and vented their anger at the senseless murder. One person fainted at the scene and required medical attention.

A case of murder is being investigated.
