A student arrested for using a slingshot at a protest at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Bonginkosi Khanyile has been charged with incitement to commit public violence, illegal gathering, possession of explosives and dangerous weapons, obstructing traffic and causing a nuisance on public roads.
National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that Khanyile was denied bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on October 17.
Khanyile was arrested during running battles between police and DUT students on September 27.
The Mercury newspaper reported last week that the 26-year old, who is studying Public Management, is the recipient of a bursary from KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s office.
