Slingshot ‘bursary’ student denied bail in Durban court

A student arrested for using a slingshot at a protest at the Durban University of Technology was denied bail on Monday.

‎National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that Bonginkosi Khanyile wa‎s denied bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.‎

The ‎case against Khanyile was postponed to November 1 for further investigations.

Kh‎anyile has been charged with incitement to commit public violence, illegal gathering, possession of dangerous weapons, obstructing traffic, causing a nuisance on public roads and possession of explosives.

He was arrested during running battles between police and DUT students on September 27.

The Mercury newspaper reported last week that the 26-year old, who is studying Public Management, ‎is the recipient of a bursary from KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s office.
