Shots fired as Escombe man is hijacked in Chatsworth

An Escombe man was lucky to escape a hijacking unharmed when hijackers fired shots as they forced him into the back seat of his vehicle in Chatsworth last night.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the motorist had arrived to visit someone in Panorama Road in Silverglen at around 7.15pm when he was hijacked. The hijackers then forced him into the back seat of the car and drove off with him in the vehicle.

“As he was parking in the driveway three suspects, armed with firearms, jumped out of a Blue BMW and forced him to get into the back seat of his vehicle,” Mathios said. “Two shots were fired during the incident and the suspects then drove off to Umlazi with the motorist sitting in the back seat. They were unable to locate the vehicle’s tracking device and eventually let the motorist go unharmed, after robbing him of his jewellery, cellphone and bank cards,” Mathios said.

“The victim managed to drive himself back to Chatsworth,” Mathios said. Bayview SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios advised motorists to be vigilant when pulling into their driveways. “Always stop parallel to the property and wait for the gates to open completely before turning into the driveway. If anyone approaches you on foot or if a suspicious vehicle pulls up while you are waiting outside the property you will be able to drive off, but if you are already parked in the driveway, hijackers can then easily ambush you and jam you in, blocking the escape route.”

“While you are sitting in your car waiting for the gates to open, be conscious of your surroundings and avoid being distracted by typing text messages or speaking on your cellphone.”

A Chatsworth couple were also hijacked and taken on a nightmare drive only two weeks ago.
