A gang of armed robbers assaulted a shop assistant during an Umbilo armed robbery yesterday.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a gang of three suspects entered the shop in Dirk Uys Street at around 11.05am.

“The gang held up the shop owner and his son at gunpoint and pushed them onto the ground. They asked a staff member where the safe was kept and when he replied that he did not know, they assaulted him by kicking him,” Mathios said.

“The robbers fled with cash and jewellery in their getaway vehicle, a grey VW Golf 7 with the registration ND 643 879. The victims did not require any medical assistance,” Mathios said.
