Senior Bluff resident shot in chest during armed robbery

A senior Bluff resident was shot by intruders during an altercation on his Alison Road property early this morning.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the man, who is believed to be about 72 years old, was sitting on his verandah having an early morning cup of coffee when two suspects entered his property. The incident occurred at around 5am.

“An altercation broke out between the resident and the suspects, and one of the suspects pointed a firearm at him and shot him in the chest. The suspects attempted to gain entry into the house but the victim’s wife disturbed them and they fled the scene on foot,” Mathios said. “Rescue Care paramedics attended the scene and transported the injured man to hospital,” Mathios said.

Brighton Beach SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios advised residents to build layers of security around their homes and to carry a spare panic remote or to install the Blue Security Mobile App on their cellphones. “If you have an electric fence it is important to ensure that it is in good working order, connected to your home alarm system and switched on while you are at home. If you need to cut away any bushes from the fence that have been causing false alarms, take the time to cut it back so that you can have the full benefit of this perimeter layer of security,” Mathios said.

“CCTV cameras and external beams in the garden provide another early warning system to detect intruders and these should be switched on while you are at home, especially at night. These additional layers of external security around your home reduce the element of surprise that criminals rely on and buy time for you to be able to lock yourself and your family in a safe room in the house. This room should be equipped with a spare panic remote and a fully charged cellphone so that you can call for help in an emergency,” Mathios said.
