Security officer fatally shot in Ballito robbery

Three people were shot, one fatally, during an armed robbery at a business premises in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal, this morning.

At approximately 07:09am members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the Tongaat Toll Plaza after receiving reports of a man lying on the roadside with a gunshot wound to his head and right arm.

Upon arrival several ambulance services as well as the SAPS were on scene. It is alleged that the injured man was one of five suspects who had held up a business premises in Ballito were they had stolen thousands of rands worth of electronic equipment.

Security officers from two different companies approached the suspects when a gun battle ensued. One security officer was shot and killed while a second was seriously injured. One suspect was also shot but managed to flee with his accomplices in a new model Mercedes Benz.

When the suspects stopped at the Tongaat Toll Plaza, their vehicle stalled.

They then abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby sugar cane plantation. The suspect who had been shot collapsed on the roadside as he was attempting to make his getaway. Paramedics treated him for his injuries before transporting him to a local hospital.

A search for the remaining suspects is currently underway.
