A second suspect in the 27 August 2020, brutal murder of Warrant Officer Phiwayinkosi Magwaza (59) has been arrested by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation assisted by the SAPS Special Task Force.

The 42-year-old man was arrested early Thursday morning at Kwamashu Hostel and was allegedly found with the deceased official firearm, a 9mm pistol.

He was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and has since appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court.

On 27 August 2020, Warrant Officer Magwaza was shot and killed whilst he was asleep in his house. The suspect made off with his service pistol. A case of murder was reported at Melmoth police station and the Hawks were tasked to investigate further.

Investigations led to the arrest of the first suspect, Sanelisiwe Mpungose (27), in September. She made her first appearance in the Melmoth Magistrates Court on 11 September 2020 and she is still in custody.

Mpungose will appear again at the same court on 23 September 2020.
