On 04 June 2018, 28 year old Nkanyiso Mthembu appeared at Ntuzuma Regional Court where he was convicted and sentenced for kidnapping, theft of motor vehicle and murder.

It is alleged that on 23 March 2018, the accused and the deceased had an agreement that the deceased was going to give R1000-00 cash to the accused for driving lessons after the accused had assisted the deceased for driving her to town. Apparently the accused had no driver licence.

Then on 25 March 2018, the accused went to the deceased house at Lindelani to request the cash that they agreed on. The deceased told the accused that she doesn’t have cash and argument broke out between the two. The accused assaulted his aunt until she lost consciousness and tied her up with electric cord and put her in the boot of her motor vehicle. He took her purse and drove to Windermere (Morningside) were he was caught by CCTV camera attempting to withdraw money using the deceased’s card and driving her motor vehicle. He further drove to Burman Bush where he dumped her body.

A case of kidnapping and theft of motor vehicle was opened at Ntuzuma SAPS and a murder case at Durban Central SAPS.

On 28 March 2018, investigating officer, D/Sgt Madonsela received information of the whereabouts of the accused from an informer at Lindelani. He was arrested and found in possession of the deceased bank card which was cut into pieces and a cellphone. Bail was denied until he was sentenced.

The accused was sentenced to 15 years for kidnapping, 10 years for theft of motor vehicle and life imprisonment for murder. All counts to run concurrently.

Station commander of Ntusuma SAPS, Colonel Madonsela commended the members for their hard work and dedication in ensuring that justice is served in this brutal killing of an elderly woman.
