SAPS operations net 1417 suspects, KZN

KwaZulu-Natal police officers embarked on a number of multidisciplinary operations in the province as from 16 July until 29 July 2019. Specific operations were conducted at areas plagued by crime as per crime threat analysis.

Those arrested were charged for a number of crimes including murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, robberies, carjacking, rapes, drunken driving and assaults. Operations that were conducted included roadblocks, suspect raids, firearm raiding, stop and search operations, inspections on liquor outlets, cordon and search operations and high visibility patrols at various parts of the province including hotspot areas.

A total of 1417 suspects were arrested for various crimes. 277 suspects were arrested for drug related crimes while 130 were arrested for drunk driving. At total of 126 were arrested for assaults; 47 for robberies, 35 were for murder, 12 for housebreakings and 15 for rapes.

75 Suspects were charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition after a total 69 firearms and 540 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

The firearms that were seized included 61 pistols; four assault rifles; two homemade firearms and two shotguns. A number of arrests were also effected for crimes such as attempted murder; carjacking; public violence; fraud; domestic violence; dealing in liquor without license.

Drugs such as dagga, heroine, mandrax and cocaine were seized during these operations. Large quantity of alcohol, clothing, suspected stolen vehicles, firearms, tools and knives were also seized.

All arrested suspects appeared in various courts in the province whilst others were issued with summons to pay fines.
