RUSA Member Shot during armed robbery Verulam  Kwazulu Natal
Man critical after attack on a smallholding near Vereeniging

A member of Reaction Unit South Africa is in critical condition after he was was shot twice in an armed robbery in progress in Verulam a short while ago. A second Reaction Officer came under heavy gunfire, returned fire and arrested a suspect a short distance from the scene.

At approx 00:38 the RUSA Operations Center received a a call for assistance from a garage on Todd Street – Verulam. Several Reaction Officers were dispatched to the garage & upon arrival Reaction Officer Kenny Govender came under heavy gunfire. The Response vehicle was shot several times. The Officer returned fire and arrested one suspect a few hundred meters from the scene.

Other Reaction Officers responded to the scene to find a RUSA Member shot twice in the abdomen, and lying on the floor inside the store. According to the cashier at the garage, three armed suspects entered the 24 hour shop under the pretense of buying. When they noticed a RUSA member inside the store, the suspects opened fire on him point blank, shooting him twice. The Officer managed to call for back up and the first Reaction Officer who arrived within a minute and came under fire. Both shootings have been captured on CCTV.

A second suspect was arrested by the Police and a red Chevrolet Aveo used in the armed robbery has been recovered.

The shot Officer is in a critical condition.
