An armed robber was left fighting for his life on Wednesday, after a shoot-out with security guards in Pinetown’s Westmead industrial area, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said that a security guard was held up by five men at a business in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“At gunpoint they forced the security guard inside the toilet and instructed him to be quiet. While the suspects were busy taking computers the guard called his colleague who came to his rescue,” she said.
The guard opened fire on one of the robbers, injuring one of them. The other four fled with their loot and managed to get away.
ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing said the armed robber was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Gwala said that the man was in hospital under police guard. She said a case of armed robbery was opened at the Pinetown police station.
