Police officers at Highflats arrested a 65 year old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm together with two other suspects, aged 32 and 62, at Mkhunya location, Highflats.

On 15 October 2017, police were conducting crime prevention operations in the area when they conducted a search on a vehicle. During the search of the vehicle they recovered a pistol with its serial number filed off as well as five rounds of ammunition.

The 65 year old driver and his two passengers were arrested and detained at the Highflats police station and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They are expected to appear at the Phungashe Periodical Court on 16 October 2017. The firearm will also be subjected to ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the country.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Bheki Langa applauded the alertness of the police officers which resulted in the seizure of the illegal firearm.

“The seizure of this firearm bodes well for our crime prevention initiatives in the Harry Gwala cluster. We will continue with these operations to curb serious and violent crimes in the area and we will arrest any person who commits a crime without fear or favor,” he said.
