On 28 February 2018, Camperdown Regional Court convicted and sentenced Siphiwe Hlophe (26) to 12 years imprisonment for raping a scholar.

In October 2016, a 21 year old pupil was on her way to the school to write her matric examination when she was accosted by Hlophe who dragged her to the bushes near the Umsunduzi River.

He raped her at knifepoint and fled. A case of rape was opened at Umsunduzi police station and it was transferred to the Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.

The investigating officer swiftly investigated the case and the accused’s identikit was circulated in media.

Hlophe was arrested within the Umsunduzi area and he was linked to another case of rape that was reported in 2015 through DNA. The investigation into that case is ongoing and Hlophe is still awaiting trial. Detective’s thorough investigation which led to the successful prosecution of Hlophe and linking him to another case is highly praised.
