There is no better feeling like seeing a criminal receiving the punishment he deserves and knowing that he will never victimise another woman again. This is how the rape victims felt on 22 January 2020, when the Madadeni Regional Court sentenced rapist Nkosinathi Masuku (24) to life imprisonment.

On 6 November 2016, at 06:30 a 38 year old victim was at her place of residence in Madadeni when Masuku requested her to open the door as he was coming to offer her a pack of cigarettes. While opening the door the accused assaulted the victim, locked the door and raped her.

She attempted to fight back but was overpowered by the accused who continued to rape her until she lost consciousness. Thinking she was dead he left the house. Little did he know the victim will regain conscious and seek help from her neighbours. A rape case was opened at the Madadeni police station for investigation.

Not wanting to change his ways in February 2017, Masuku attacked and raped a 36 year old pregnant victim who was sleeping at her place of residence at Madadeni. The victim heard a knock on her door and went to investigate when she was greeted by Masuku who informed her that he was sent by her boyfriend to fetch her.

The victim was hesitant and the accused detected that she was not falling for his lies and attacked her. He assaulted, strangled and raped her before fleeing the scene.

Police were informed and a case of rape was opened at Madadeni police station. The docket was transferred to the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigations and the accused was immediately arrested and was linked to the 2016 rape incident.

He appeared in court and his bail application was successfully opposed until he was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and assault.
