The Empangeni Regional Court convicted and sentenced Thokozani Ndawonde (40) to 20 years imprisonment for rape. He was sentenced after the court heard how he attacked and raped the victim last year.
On 12 August 2017 a nine year old victim was at Obizo area, Empangeni when she was sent by her aunt to a nearby tuckshop. While on her way, she was approached by the accused who dragged her to a nearby bush and raped. The victim reported the matter to her aunt and later a case was opened at Empangeni police station for further investigation.
Through hard work by the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, the accused was arrested the following day and was charged accordingly.
A well prepared docket with sufficient evidence was presented at court and this enabled the good conviction.
