Blue Security armed response officers and members of the public arrested five suspects including an armed robber and a housebreaker over the past 24 hours.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said in the latest incident an armed response officer arrested a suspect after he gained entry into a property in Vasco Da Gama Drive in Amanzimtoti at about 9am this morning. “Two suspects jumped over the driveway gate of the property and went into the garage where they stole food from a fridge, a pick and other goods before fleeing the scene.”

Mathios said armed response officers responded to the scene of the crime and managed chase down and arrest one of the suspects who was handed over to the Amanzimtoti SAPS.

An armed response officer also arrested an alleged housebreaker who attempted to break into a house in Kingsway Road in Warner Beach yesterday. The incident occurred at around 10.05am. “A resident reported that she had spotted a burglar trying to break into her property and when she screamed, he turned and fled across a railway line and onto the beach. The information was relayed to our officer who was patrolling in the area, and he nabbed the suspect as he emerged from the beach,” Mathios said.

The suspect was handed over to the Amanzimtoti SAPS at the scene.

Mathios said a second suspect was arrested after he attempted to steal a battery from vehicle in Melbourne Road in Umbilo at around 12.15. “The suspect was trying to steal the battery and turned and fled the scene when he realised that he had been spotted. Our officer gave chase and arrested the suspect in Sydney Road. He later told our officer that he had tried to steal the battery but did not have a number 10 spanner to finish the job. He was handed over to the Umbilo SAPS,” Mathios said.

Mathios said a Blue Security armed response officer had also responded to the scene of an armed robbery in Joe Slovo Street in the CBD where a gang of four suspects held up staff at a business premises. “The gang held up staff and fled with a range of goods from the business, but a quick thinking member of the public managed to arrest one of the suspects,” Mathios said.

Mathios said a business owner arrested a suspect in Bluff Road after he had attempted to steal a drill from a shop at around 4pm. “Two suspects tried to steal a drill but turned and attempted to flee when the business owner spotted them. He managed to apprehend one of the suspects who was later handed over to Brighton Beach SAPS,” Mathios said.
