Amanzimtoti SAPS noticed a pattern in various business burglaries during the past two months where the same vehicle was being utilized in the area.

After all the information was gathered and strategic planning sessions between Amanzimtoti SAPS and other security forces including the neighborhood watch were held, a joint operation was conducted in the early hours of 7 March 2018.

The identified vehicle used in the burglaries was first spotted in Kingsway northbound going towards Warner Beach and the members pursued the vehicle. When the suspects noticed they were being followed by police, they started shooting at the members.

Police returned fire, the suspects’ vehicle was intercepted near the service station and five suspects were arrested. A firearm and housebreaking implements were recovered and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation.

The suspects aged between 25 and 43 years were charged with attempted murder, possession of housebreaking implements, possession of an unlicensed firearm and pointing of a firearm. They will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court soon.

The suspects were positively linked to a business burglary incident that occurred earlier this month. One of the five suspects sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard.
