The Provincial Commissioner for Kwazulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula has condemned the actions of individuals who attempted to intimidate police officers at Richards Bay. “We will not tolerate attacks on our police officers whilst they are executing their duties. We will also not be intimidated by anybody who will attempt to prevent us from executing our legal mandate. Those who do so, will be dealt with harshly,” he said.

On 19 August 2019, approximately 100 individuals gathered illegally in the Richards Bay CBD. Police officers responded and a 32 year old suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of a dangerous weapon. Following the arrest, the same group gathered at the Richards Bay police station and demanded the release of the suspect.

Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the unruly group. As the group fled, two licensed firearms were found lying on the ground. A total of eight suspects aged between 27 and 57 were arrested for public violence and are expected to appear in court soon.
